In various forms, on many instruments, and for many years, I've been trying to write something which sounds like Hoagy Carmichael, something with that steady, lazy groove and those playful syncopations. This is certainly the closest I've come to success.

Ukulele 2 needs to play a steady, constant, almost insistent part. It is the driving monotony of the accompaniment which gives the tune its light spring. Likewise, the first part needs to be played with maximum expression. Rhythms can be taken much more loosely than I have on the recording. The whole point of the four-to-the-floor accompaniment is that it gives the most possible freedom to the person playing the tune to make it their own.
